It’s enough to drive you crazy. And yet, this is what happened to user RedYourDead on Reddit. After his B850i Lightning killed his Ryzen 7 9800X3D, he received a new one from AMD’s after-sales service, and guess what happens again a month later?
A user sees his Ryzen 7 9800X3D die twice on his ASRock motherboard!
Broadly speaking, the Redditor in question had set up a PC including a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the most powerful gaming processor currently available. As for the motherboard, he opted for a B850i Lightning from ASRock. However, things being what they are, the CPU burns out after two months of use… Balls. Since the death of his CPU was not the result of misuse, a request for after-sales service was made and accepted. Later, he found himself with a new CPU, which he mounted back onto his motherboard, and again, it burned out.
In this story, the user had updated his motherboard’s bios to version 3.25, launched in May, as version 3.40 was not yet available at the time. In any case, the new CPU is dead again. On the other hand, with bios 3.25, the CPU lasted even less time: just one month compared with two with version 3.15 of December 2024.
Meanwhile, ASRock recently launched version 3.40 of its bios for its AM5 boards. This contains some interesting fixes, notably for LLC and SOC voltages, which are now fixed. This limits the risk of killing a CPU, but above all, it complies with AMD specifications!
