In a significant shift for PC gamers, Nvidia has officially retired its GeForce Experience software with the release of Graphics Driver Version 566.36. The GeForce Experience, a staple for managing GPU settings and driver updates, has been replaced by the new Nvidia App, signalling a unified approach to GPU management and features.
The Nvidia App, which exited its beta phase on November 12, 2024 (says Tom’s Hardware), integrates all major GPU-related tools and services into a single platform. It replaces GeForce Experience and begins to phase out the Nvidia Control Panel—a utility that has long been considered outdated. While the Control Panel is still required for some advanced settings, like Nvidia Surround, its eventual deprecation is expected as these features transition to the new app.
The Nvidia Control panel, as it existed before the Nvidia App was first introduced, has been around for a long time; this OC3D post suggests it existed in 1997. However, we do not know whether this was the first version.
What the Nvidia App brings to the table
The Nvidia App combines game optimization, driver updates, system tweaks, and access to Nvidia’s ecosystem—such as GeForce Now, Nvidia Broadcast, and Nvidia Canvas—all within a sleek, modern interface. It introduces faster load times, streamlined customization, and a refreshed in-game overlay accessible via Alt + Z. The overlay now features a sidebar layout with options for recording, screenshots, instant replays, and Nvidia-exclusive tools like Photo Mode and Highlights.
Additionally, gamers can record gameplay at up to 120 FPS using the AV1 codec, ensuring top-notch quality and smoother captures. The new app also eliminates the need for an Nvidia account, allowing privacy-conscious users to access features like automatic driver updates without signing in.

While the Nvidia App doesn’t stray too far from the familiar GeForce Experience framework, it brings a much-needed update to performance, usability, and convenience.
