AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE: first observations

Published:

As you know, the Radeon RX 9070 GRE is currently exclusive to the Chinese market. In fact, it has just been launched there, and we’re taking advantage of some test feedback from the local media. For those not in the know, the RX 9070 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) is based on the same NAVI 48 chip as the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. However, this is a degraded or neutered version, with “only” 3,072 flow processors, down 15% on the 9070 (non-XT). As for memory, AMD uses 12 GB of GDDR6 on a 192-bit bus. Here too, memory bandwidth has obviously been reduced.

The RX 9070 GRE is very close to an RTX 5070…

But despite this, the first tests show a card very close to the RTX 5070 in most games. On average, there’s a 5% difference in performance between the RX 9070 GRE and the RTX 5070…which is particularly astonishing, and probably has something to do with the games chosen. On the other hand, the pleasant surprise is to be found in Ray Tracing, a favorite domain of green cards. With the exception of Cyberpunk 2077, this RX 9070 GRE is on a par with the RTX 5070 on titles such as Assassin’s Creed: Shadows or F1 24. The main disappointment comes from the fact that the card offers nothing in terms of performance compared with the RDNA 3-based RX 7900 GRE.

…but with a big disparity in results

Returning to the differences between this RX 9070 GRE and the RTX 5070, there’s a big disparity in results depending on the game. In some cases, the RX 9070 GRE is just as fast as the RTX 5070, but in others, the latter can deliver up to 20% better performance. This explains an average difference of 5%. Will this disparity be gradually bridged by new drivers?

Now, if we put this RX 9070 GRE up against an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, the AMD card is 27% faster on average. Which raises questions about the future positioning of the RX 9060 XT. Either the latter are there to oppose the RTX 5060 TI, and we wonder what the 9070 GRE has to do with it… Or the future RX 9060 XT is far inferior to the RTX 5060 Ti, and the GRE is intended to fill the gap…

The fact remains that its price positioning in China, transposed to our local market, raises questions. It’s hard to see a clear place for this card…if it ever leaves China.
