Zootopia 2 opening weekend is biggest ever for an animated movie

It’s the fourth-biggest opening of all time, and the biggest ever for an animated movie

Disney’s Zootopia 2 is an unprecedented smash hit. The animated sequel earned $556.4 million in its opening weekend: the biggest debut ever for an animated movie, and the fourth-biggest opening of all time, period. Only Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home had bigger opening weekends.

On the animated side, it beat the record set earlier this year by Chinese epic Ne Zha 2, the highest-grossing animated film of all time. And herein lies the clue to Zootopia 2‘s massive success. Unlike a lot of recent Hollywood product, audiences in China are all in on the new Disney movie. Almost half the film’s international opening weekend take — $271.6 million, to be precise — was earned in China, making it the second-best opening for a non-Chinese movie of all time in the country (behind Endgame).

That’s on top of a $156 million opening in the U.S., which is second only to Disney’s Moana 2 in terms of Thanksgiving opening weekends, and second only to A Minecraft Movie in 2025, coming in ahead of the Lilo & Stitch remake and Wicked: For Good.

In other words: Zootopia 2 is absolutely massive. The movie’s performance, alongside a very strong second weekend for Wicked: For Good, will come as a big relief to theater owners after a particularly poor start to fall 2025 at the box office.

It’s also a lot of fun.
