Death Stranding Isolations is expected to be released in 2027
Anime and video game adaptations are two of the biggest fronts in the streaming wars, and Disney is seeking to bolster its position in both with an anime based on Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding series. Kojima will serve as executive producer on the show, tentatively called Death Stranding Isolations, which will stream exclusively on Disney Plus in 2027.
Rather than adapt the journey of Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus) told in 2019’s Death Stranding or Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which was released in June, Death Stranding Isolations will tell a completely new story. It will follow a young man and woman setting out on an adventure through the post-apocalyptic world, where civilization has collapsed after the connection between the living and the souls of the dead caused a massive explosion.
The series will use hand-drawn animation from E&H Production, the studio behind Adult Swim’s Ninja Kamui. It will be the directorial debut of Takayuki Sano, whose animation credits include Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods and Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
Death Stranding Isolations is one of three Death Stranding adaptations in the works. Michael Sarnoski, who helmed A Quiet Place: Day One, will write and direct a prequel for A24 that will delve into the mysteries of the Death Stranding events. Aaron Guzikowski (Raised by Wolves, Prisoners) is attached to write an animated feature, which will also be an original story. The first trailer for the film, tentatively titled Death Stranding Mosquito, was released in September. It will be directed by Hiroshi Miyamoto (Eiga Precure Dream Stars!, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero) and produced by ABC ANIMATION STUDIO.
